MIL-DTL-62478C(AT)
3.5.3 Safety. The optical coupler shall pose no physical hazards to personnel operating
the assembly. The optical coupler shall be free of structural and welding defects, chips, burrs,
sharp edges, process residue, or any other form of contamination that may be harmful to the
operator (see 4.8.3)
3.6 Operating environment conditions. The optical coupler shall function as specified
when exposed to the environmental conditions specified herein. The optical coupler shall meet
the operating requirements of 3.3.1 through 3.3.8 during exposure to those environments
designated as operating, as well as, after exposure to those designated as nonoperating or storage.
3.6.1 Temperature. The optical coupler shall operate in ambient air temperature of
+145 degrees Fahrenheit (F) (63 degrees Celsius (C)) to -25F (-32C). The optical coupler
shall be capable of being stored at temperatures of +160F (71C) to -40F (-40C) (see 4.9.1).
3.6.2 Temperature shock. The optical coupler shall not show any operational
degradation after being exposed to temperature shock in accordance with temperature extremes
of -40F (-40C) to +160F (71C) (see 4.9.2).
3.6.3 Humidity. The optical coupler shall operate in humidity conditions of 95% relative
humidity (rh) at temperatures from -25F (-32C) to +145F (63C); and at humidity conditions
of 5% rh at temperatures from +70F (21C) to +145F (63C) (see 4.9.3).
3.6.4 Ambient pressure. The optical coupler shall operate at ambient air pressure of
14.7 to 10.1 pounds per square inch absolute (psia) (100 to 69.6 kPa) which corresponds to
altitudes of 0 to 10 000 feet (ft) (0 to 3.05 kilometers (km)). Nonoperating, the optical coupler
shall withstand exposure to air pressures from 14.7 to 2.47 psia (100 to 17 kPa) which
corresponds to altitudes of 0 to 40 000 ft (0 to 12.2 km) (see 4.9.4).
3.6.5 Rain (nonoperating). The optical coupler shall operate without degradation of
performance after exposure to a 12 hour, 9.5 in. (24.1 centimeters (cm)) rainfall which includes
intermittent winds of 35 knots (65 kilometers per hour (km/h)) and the following intensities
(see 4.9.5):
Duration
Rate of rainfall
1 minute
27 inches per hour (in./h) (68.6 centimeters per hour (cm/h))
5 minutes
12 in./h (30.5 cm/h)
10 minutes
9 in./h (23 cm/h)
1 hour
5.5 in./h (14 cm/h)
3.6.6 Sand and dust. The optical coupler shall be operational while exposed to wind
blown particles 0.000394 to 0.0394 in. (0.01 to 1 mm) in diameter with predominant diameters
between 0.00591 and 0.01181 in. (0.15 and 0.30 mm) with winds greater than 30 knots (56
km/h) (see 4.9.6).
